To begin this essay, it is essential to define some key terms. The Nature-Nurture debate argues whether our behaviour is as a result of our biology (such as our genes or neurochemistry), or if our behaviour arises from learning from others. For the purpose of this essay, a bully is defined as â€Å"a person who uses their strength or power to hurt or frighten people who are weaker† (Oxford Student’s dictionary, 2007). It is essential to investigate why bullying occurs and how to prevent it as bullies as well as their victims are likely to develop mental health problems. Children and adolescents who bully often develop increased levels of negative mental health outcomes in adulthood, as shown in Copeland, Wolk Angold et al’s (2013) study; 9.4%†¦show more content†¦However, these studies cannot be fully relied upon as it is difficult to falsify evolutionary theories of behaviour as we are unable to go back in time to see how our ancestors truly acted, the refore much of this research is based upon inferences. Furthermore, both studies conducted by Volk et al are correlational, so it is difficult to determine causation; other factors such as abuse within the family or peer pressure may have caused the increases in bullying and in sexual behaviour. Another aspect of nature that can be linked to bullying behaviour is genetics. Our genotype can create a vulnerability to certain mental illnesses or behaviours, making it more likely that those with a certain gene will behave in such a way. To investigate the influences of genes, twin studies with both monozygotic aka identical (MZ) and dizygotic aka non-identical (DZ) twins are often used as MZ twins share 100% of the same genes, so they may be more likely to both show the same behaviours compared to DZ twins. A twin study conducted by Ball et al (2007) found a 61% variation in bullying behaviour to be genetic as opposed to environmental influences. The study also showed that MZ twins had a concordance rate of them both engaging in bullying behaviour of 0.63, whereas DZ twins had a concordance rate of 0.33. The Renaissance was a time of rebirth. It introduced to us different ways of thinking and new ways to express ourselves. The Enlightenment was a time of political and social expression. It was a time when people would speak out about how the Government should change or approach problems. The Protestant Reformation was a time period of rebellion and question. Did the actor present a believable character and an interesting performance? The actor, Jason, created a very believable character in the sense that I could understand why John Brown would want to go live in a hospital. I understand why he wanted to stay away from everyone and everything and just go to a hospital where he could be taken care of. He even says it literally in one of the lines, â€Å"I came for the clean linen, I came for the calm, the meals on tray, time passing by and bringing nothing. † He didn’t want anyone expecting anything from him; he just wanted to do nothing. This was his â€Å"separate peace†. Did the actor create believable relationships? Yes, the actor created believable relationships, ones that the audience could have thought unorthodox but these relationships reflected his unusual character and this added more to the plot of the play. For example, when the Matron asks him â€Å"and how are we this morning? † his reply is â€Å"we are very well thank you, how are you? † This is bizarre in the sense that a patient doesn’t normally ask a doctor/nurse/matron how they are when they’re coming to check on you. Did the actor ‘listen, respond and react’ truthfully under the ‘imaginary circumstances’? Yes, he would listen very well to the other actor/actress with him on stage and then he would respond with his line at the right time, in the right tone of voice. He did not just say lines flatly and his movements on stage were motivated from the lines. For example, when he asked Maggie â€Å"what are you like when you’re not wearing your uniform†, he was painting right before that but he paused, went to sit on the bed while rolling around the paint in the bucket and then asked her that question. He didn’t meant it in a sexual sense but rather in a curious one because he always sees Maggie in the hospital context with her uniform so he was wondering what she was like out of that environment. Under the imaginary circumstances, the actor was truthful and believable. Was the character sustained throughout the performance? The character was sustained throughout the whole performance; it was always John Brown there, rather than Jason. Even when he was painting he was still 100% focused and in character and I found that pretty remarkable because to be able to concentrate in order to end up with such a beautiful painting and still be able to stay in character and focused isn’t exactly easy. Furthermore, when he went into his â€Å"dream-like† state when he was talking about the wartime, he absorbed the audience into his thought process in a sense that they could feel the pain he went through at that time. Could you hear and understand what the character was saying (projection and subtext)? Yes, the actor had outstanding projection, even when he was painting and his back was towards the audience, I could still hear him very clearly. Regarding subtext, the character did a good job revealing it. For example, when he tells the Doctor â€Å"it must be wonderful to have the healing touch†, he says it in a sarcastic tone of voice and that gets through to the audience so they laugh. The actor also portrays John Brown’s humorous side well after the Doctor tells him â€Å"Matron will be along to discuss your case with you tomorrow† and he replies â€Å"my finger? †, when really he knew it had nothing to do with his finger but rather with his unnecessary stay at the hospital. Please conclude with comments on the following: Visual (set, costumes, lights) The set was simple; it reflected the white typical hospital set. The costumes really fit the actors well, and especially matron’s costume was very appropriate and added more to her character, she wasn’t wearing the cliche scrub uniform but an actual black outfit. Furthermore, the lighting was an important component of the play; the diming, and the dream-like state when Brown was talking about the war all added more suspense to the mood. Sound The sound suited the play very well, all four music tracks were calm and this added more to the hospital setting and just the overall environment of Maggie and Brown’s relationship. Also, the music that was playing during the time Brown was painting went with his painting of nature and the trees and landscape. In addition, the song that was on when Brown was changing was very romantic and built up on the suspense of both the preceding and proceeding scenes. Lastly, the fact that the music faded in and out created an overall serene atmosphere.

The play â€Å"Stone Cold† is written by Joe Standerline and is based on the novel by Robert Swindells. The plot has two main characters, Link and Shelter, who are very different people. Link is a sixteen year old boy who now lives on the streets because he felt neglected at home. Shelter, in the other hand is completely different for Link. He comes across as an affectionate man taking in the people off the street but then his personality changes and he ends up killing them. Some may say he his psychotic. Link who’s real name is Dave, began to live on the streets after he returned to his house to find it was locked even though is step father was in. The next day Link returned home and he began arguing with Vince about why he had locked him out, his mum entered the room and began to take Vince’s side, and this left Link feeling unloved and hurt. When Link’s time is up at his apartment, he goes onto live on the streets for good, although he is still just as vulnerable; â€Å"Come on, you know what it’s like, I was here before you honest. † This was on the first night of living on the streets when a â€Å"Scouse† takes Links watch. Link did not know what to do or what to say to get the â€Å"Scouse† away from him. Days later, Link begins to adapt to living on the streets when he bumps into another â€Å"dosser†, Ginger. While Link is being made homeless, Shelter, in contrast, is making it clear to the reader he is going to do about the problem of homelessness. By acting like a concerned and loving man he comes across trustworthy to the â€Å"dossers†, this making him able to take each one back to his house. â€Å"Has anything happened to you son? You know, anyone tried anything? You can tell me about it. † After taking them in, Shelter’s personality would change almost instantly into the opposite of what he was like when the â€Å"dossers† first met him. After giving them food, Shelter sneaks up behind them, stabs them and at that moment snaps their necks. Relating back to Shelter being in the army, he records moments before and after he kills each â€Å"dosser†. As well as this he takes their picture, cuts their hair short and dresses the bodies up in old army clothing. Link starts to cope with living on the streets when he meets Ginger, a boy who has lived on the streets for a period of time already so is experienced. Ginger shows him about and both boys end up staying in a hostel for the homeless. The conditions they are living in are not up to standards for Link as the first night there all he can do is complain; â€Å"Phwarr! This must be the most disgusting place on earth†¦Ã¢â‚¬  His feelings towards the other homeless citizens are different. He seems to get along with most of them especially one, Gail. When Shelter manages to kidnap and kill Ginger, Links feelings begin to change. He starts to be questionable for the whereabouts of Ginger, at this same time he begins to be closer with Gail and his feelings become stronger. Meanwhile, Shelter is continuing his campaign to kill homeless people. He makes sure that no-one finds out who he has killed by hiding each of them down in a hole below his living room floor. Link and Shelter meet one morning when Link has become more suspicious that he has been kidnapping each â€Å"dosser†. To Link, Shelter appears to look like any other old man that they had seen that’s same morning; â€Å"Doesn’t look much like an abductor to me. † Things begin to change when Link enters Shelters house. He notice’s that Shelter has the watch that the â€Å"Scouse† had taken from him at the station. Shelter sees that Link has the watch and his personality becomes more aggressive towards Link; â€Å"†¦ scruffy little scum-bag†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Shelter becomes rapidly worse then tries to kill Link the way he killed every other â€Å"dosser†. When Gail reappears Link finally discovers the truth about her. This happens just after Shelter begins to go crazy at Link and Louise sees the curtain falling when Link falls. She manages to get Mr Hook and the police to arrive at that moment in time. Before Gavin walks in Louise manages to say sorry to a quizzical Link. Everything then becomes clear to Link his feelings completely change towards Louise; â€Å"Watched him pick us off one by one until you had enough for a good story. †
